Caroline Petit’s ‘The Natural History of Love’ draws from the true story of French explorer and Naturalist, Francois and his lover Madame Fonceca.
When Melbourne lawyer Nathan Smithson takes on the case of mad, wealthy Edward Fonçeca’s inheritance trial against his brother in 1902, he must uncover secrets hidden within the diary entries of lovers. The story travels far and wide and we immerse ourselves following the story through Brazil, France and Melbourne. Although at times disturbing, with the characters situated within the context of their time, Petit ultimately presents a love story in all its heartbreak, scandal and triumphs.
