The Colony

The colony is set on an island in Ireland still speaking Irish during the troubles. When an English man arrives to paint the local landscape over the summer he clashes with a French man who has been studying the native language on the island. This novel expertly examines identity and family in a settler colony and the broader political landscape of Ireland at the time. It is a beautifully written novel which I still think about. I highly recommend.
